Facial Wrinkles

The formation of wrinkles is mainly caused by the disappearance of elastin and collagen fibres in the skin, which occurs naturally with age. Over time, the quantity of these skin components gradually decreases, leading to skin depressions known as wrinkles and lines. The content of collagen in the skin decreases by about 1% with each year of life. Connective tissue collapses, and skin and facial contours lose their shape and firmness.

Treating facial wrinkles and lines with the Personal Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller versions offers results similar to professional mesotherapy and microdermabrasion. Piercing the upper layers of the skin with microneedles leads to increased blood flow in the skin and stimulates fibroblasts to synthesise collagen and elastin. Each subsequent treatment gradually reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Eye wrinkles

One of the first and most profound signs of skin ageing is the formation of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and above the lips. Scars

Scars are remnants of various type skin injuries such as wounds, cuts, burns, acne outbreaks or surgeries. When an injury occurs and there is a violation of the skin’s cutaneous continuity, the human body instantly initiates its self-healing mechanisms to protect itself from microorganisms and water loss. The body starts to produce more collagen fibres to fill and eventually close the wound. The scar tissue is different in structure and appearance to that of healthy skin and often makes the skin look rough and damaged.

Skin Needling scars with the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller is an extremely effective way of reducing the appearance of scars, especially pitted scars from acne, chicken pox, and other injuries. Only keloid and raised scars are not likely to benefit from the microneedle therapy. All the other scar types should improve greatly with repetitive treatment.

Scar revision with the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller involves puncturing the scar and its surroundings with microneedles, causing the formation of tiny perforations, which in turn soften the scar tissue and relieve the strain.

This kind of scar perforation leads to softening of the skin in the scarred area and gently relaxing the strained skin. Immediately after the treatment, the micropunctures created in the scar tissue fill with new collagen fibres and the scar undergoes remodelling that leads to a more even skin appearance.

Pigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. Its formation is associated with abnormal production of melanin (the brown pigment in the skin) by melanocytes.  

Melanocytes are the pigment producing cells situated at the base of the epidermis. Our genetic skin colour is determined by the amount of melanocytes present in the epidermis (the higher the number of melanocytes the darker the skin tone). Melanocytes protect keratinocytes, (cells located in the top layers of the epidermis) from UV-induced mutation and damage by producing and coating the upper layer of keratinocytes with melanin pigment. This process is commonly known as tanning.

In response to different triggers, such as hormones, skin injury, inflammation or medications, melanocytes can start to overproduce melanin, leading to hyperpigmentation if the skin is not protected from UV exposure. Very often, hyperpigmentation results from post-treatment inflammation, for example after chemical peeling, laser resurfacing and other invasive treatments.

A distinct advantage of Skin Needling over other treatment methods is that melanocytes (pigment producing cells) are not negatively impacted, limiting the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentary disorders. Contrary to many procedures, such as peels or laser, Skin Needling can be performed on all skin colours.

By enhancing the penetration of the active ingredients from lightening serums and creams, Skin Needling can greatly enhance the effects of any skin lightening regimen.

It is recommended that you use the 0.2mm version of the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroler to only enhance the penetration of lightening actives at the epidermal level of the skin. Using longer needles may cause deeper penetration of the active ingredients from lightening serums and creams, which is not desirable in treating hyperpigmentation as it is a very superficial skin condition. This does not mean that using longer microneedles with lightening treatments is harmful; however it would not produce optimal results.

Cellulite, also known as “orange peel”, is a common skin disorder affecting approximately 90% of women. Its primary symptom is the dimpled appearance of the skin that many people have on their hips, thighs, and buttocks. This characteristic unevenness is caused by the enlarged and unevenly distributed fat cells that press on and deform the connective tissues underneath the epidermis and lead to the appearance of “orange peel”. Fat cells become enlarged due to the distorted function of the lymphatic system, which should normally expel excess fat, water and waste products from our bodies. When these substances accumulate in the body, particularly on the skin’s surface, fat cells become enlarged and eventually lead to the formation of visible bumps on thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms.
