Medik8 Dermaroller


Before we go into more details, we would like to emphasise that the induction of body's own new collagen is a medical procedure and should only be performed by trained and qualified skin care professionals like Invigor8 Paramedical Skin Technicians.

  

Not all skin needling are alike. Skin needling has no heat and does not injure tissues. It can be performed on all skin types and colour anywhere on the body.  It is clinically proven to induce production of collagen with just one treatment.

Collagen Induction Treatment

The Collagen-Induction-Treatment (CIT) by micro-needling the skin treats fine wrinkles, acne scaring, pigmentation or skin changes associated with actinic damage or aging without surgery and associated risks and downtime. CIT utilizes the Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller device for skin needling that creates micro-needle punctures to the skin surface. As a consequence, the repair process releases numerous growth and healing factors that stimulate new collagen to be deposited under the skin surface. The repair process will actually extend over a twelve to sixteen week period after treatment. A series of CIT treatments may be required to condition the skin and achieve the maximum cosmetic result.

  

Its application requires special medical titanium dermarollers and medical knowledge. As human skin has an average thickness of 1.5 mm, Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller needle lengths range from 0.2 to 3.0 mm. Needles longer than 0.25 mm may cause pain and require a pre-anaesthetisation of the skin. In order to avoid infections and other unpleasant experiences, a medical procedure should always be performed in a clinical environment!

 Mechanism of action of Skin needleing

How Dermaroller worksThe principle of using micro-needles for skin treatment is quite easy to explain.
  
In micro-needling. the human body's self-healing mechanisms is activated. The skin reacts to the intrusion of micro-needles like it would react to any other skin penetrating object to repair itself.
  
But the difference is the size of the object - the micro-needle. The intrusion of tiny surgical needles (provided they are professionally designed) is sensed by skin nerve receptors as an injury stimulus. But the needles are so fine and thin that tissue damage is unlikely. The skin integrity actually stays intact.
  
However, this “nerve-stimulus”, transported by electrical signals, triggers the cascade of the healing process. Skin cells, in a radius of 1 to 2 mm around the pricking channel, release growth signals to undifferentiated cells. These signals in return stimulate the proliferation of new cells, e.g. fibroblasts to transform into collagen and elastin fibres.

The task of fibroblasts is to migrate to the point of intrusion for wound closure. The pricking channels, caused by the micro-needles, close very quickly and no tissue lesion can be detected, and none has to be repaired. The transformation for wound repair cells (e.g. fibroblasts and others) is a natural and automatic process . Their final mission is to transform into collagen fibres. They integrate into the existing collagen formation in the upper dermis.

This new fibre formation – in terms of many hundred percent - thickens the skin and fills former atrophic scars or fine lines. As single needle prick is not worth mentioning. But if thousands of microscopic small needle-pricks are set, the induced collagen formation becomes confluent and forms a new collagen layer. This body reaction is called neo-collagenesis.
  
 In addition, the inner cells that coat our vessels (endothelial cells), and in particular these of our capillaries, are also stimulated to proliferate. They react to this stimulation by sprouting out new capillaries that in return results in more and b etter blood supply of the skin. This reaction is called neo-angiogenesis.
  
These facts explain the minimal visible tissue reaction and the short period of inflammation that usually only lasts for some hours. In contrary to all ablative techniques the proliferation phase starts shortly after the treatment. As the epidermis stays intact and the fine pricking channels are closed within minutes, post-op infections have never been reported from treatments done in a clinical environment with a fully trained Paramedical Skin Practitioner.
  
For six weeks after micro-needling, a dramatic increase of new collagen and elastin fibers will be clearly visible. They reach into a depth of 0.6 mm. The increase of new fibers can reach 1000% with one procedure.

Facial Wrinkles

The formation of wrinkles is mainly caused by the disappearance of elastin and collagen fibres in the skin, which occurs naturally with age. Over time, the quantity of these skin components gradually decreases, leading to skin depressions known as wrinkles and lines. The content of collagen in the skin decreases by about 1% with each year of life. Connective tissue collapses, and skin and facial contours lose their shape and firmness.

  

Eye wrinkles

One of the first and most profound signs of skin ageing is the formation of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and above the lips. Degradation of collagen and elastin fibres leads to decreased skin firmness and elasticity. Simultaneously, the cells of the sub-dermal tissue begin to diminish and the skin starts to lose its ability to retain water. As a result eye bags and wrinkles including crow’s feet and peri-oral lines, are formed.

  

While these areas are usually the first places to give away age, they are also the most difficult to treat, due to the sensitivity and thinness of the skin in those areas. Chemical peels and laser work by removing the top layer of the epidermis to shallow the depth of the wrinkles and induce collagen synthesis. The peeling solution can also be quite irritating. Medik8 Dermaroller pocedure does not generate heat, therefore does not pose a threat of a thermal injury and can be performed on skin of any origin and type. How often can I get Medik8 Dermaroller CIT?

Unlike ablative procedures a CIT can be performed repeatedly. Depending on your skin condition, and to achieve maximum possible results, we recommend an initial treatment cycle of 3 treatments. As the new collagen formation needs time to mature, we propose an interval of 6 weeks before the next CIT is commenced. As your skin continues to age an annual refresher CIT should be considered.

What are the complications and risks of Medik8 Dermaroller?

It is absolutely vital that the microneedling is performed by trained and qualified skin care professionals like Invigor8 Paramedical Skin Practitioners. The following risks will be explained to you further during your skin analysis and consultation.

    • The skin may remain red (erythema) for three to four days after CIT treatment. As the skin heals the erythema will resolve.
    • Bruising may occur as a result of treatment.
    • A small number of patients may experience hyper-pigmentation of the skin surface (especially if the skin is not protected from the sun's rays). This will resolve in several weeks and may be treated with a pigment gel cream like Danne Super Bright creme or Cosmedix Lightning, depending on skin type and condition.
    • Patients with a history of herpes simplex (cold sores) may experience a flare up of the disease.
    • Infection is a rare possibility.

    

 What are the contraindications?

Any form of skin needling must not be use on the following skin conditions:

  • Active acne outbreaks or active skin infections.
    Eczema, psoriasis and other chronic conditions. 
    Rosacea and blood clotting problems. 
    Actinic (solar) keratosis. 
    Keloid or raised scars. 
    Raised moles or warts.
  • taking blood thinning medication or is a haemophiliac
